Dealing With Resistance

It can be annoying when bugs are hitting you in the face. And yet, it means you’re moving along very fast. It can be frustrating when obstacles keep popping up to block your path. And yet it is a sure sign that you’re making progress.

It can take a great deal of effort to work through the challenges that arise each day. And yet the more difficult those challenges become, the higher you are climbing.

The faster you go, the more resistance you’re likely to encounter. Fortunately, the faster you go the more momentum you build.

As that momentum grows, you can more and more quickly turn the problems into opportunities. Though the challenges grow intense as you move faster, your ability to handle them grows at an even faster pace.

Choose to work through the obstacles, to seek out the challenges, and to not let the frustrations get you down. For as you move through them, you are moving toward success, achievement, and fulfillment.

Change Your Belief System (BS)

We need to check our belief systems, our BS.  Is it supporting us or hurting us?  I remember when I first got started in home business, my BS was definately hurting me.  I wanted to think that earning income was out of my control and that the company, the trainers, the marketing system etc., was the key to my success.  I soon realized that all of the keys to success were within me, and I needed to change my belief system to realize that the only thing holding me back was me.  I had it already, and you’ve got it now.  When you realize that you have it, you will start expecting yourself to take the action necesary.  Every piece of you that thinks you are missing something essential to have success is giving you another little excuse for not making it happen now. 

Have you ever seen one of those little toy cars?  They bump into the wall, back up, and go forward again, over and over.  If you have one door open eventually the car will find its way because it keeps going until it makes it.  And that is the way a person with the belief system that says ”I CAN DO IT” functions.  You will learn different methods by pushing yourself harder.  These methods will unfold to you like a beautiful movie.  You’ve got to play the scene you are in with everything you’ve got.  Do your best each moment and soak up every bit of information you can along the way, all with the understanding that you’ve got this.  You can do this!

Ever notice how easy it is to make negative judgments about other people?

Whether it’s “idiots” we encounter on the road … or “slower than slow” people who serve us … or “losers” who can’t play sports nearly as well as our kids can – many of us have developed the knee-jerk habit of assigning degrading labels to people we don’t know. We don’t really know them, or their situations, or their challenges, but we sure as heck know what they should do. Or at least that’s the way it seems when we spout out phrases that begin with:

They oughtta … Why don’t they just … It’s easy – all they need to do is …. 

Nope, we don’t know those folks, but we know what they are.  We’re not in their situations, but we know what they should do. Hmmmm. If all that seems illogical, unfair, presumptuous, and disrespectful to you, you are right. And if all that seems like terrible behavior for leaders to exhibit, you are doubly right!

To be sure, situations involving other people – including those that occur in our teams – can seem clear, simple, and very black and white from where we stand. However, we need to remember two things: 1) Unless we’re dealing with (or have dealt with) the exact same circumstances, we’re on the outside looking in, and 2) The real world is rarely black and white – it’s usually shades of gray.

Ant Philosophy

I believe everyone should study ants.  Ants have an amazing four-part philosophy.  The first part is, ants never quit.  That’s a good philosophy. If they’re headed somewhere and you try to stop them; they’ll look for another way. They’ll climb over, they’ll climb under, they’ll climb around and keep looking for another way. What a great philosophy, to never quit looking for a way to get where you’re supposed to go. Second, ants think winter all summer. That’s an important perspective. You can’t be so naive as to think summer will last forever. They don’t sit around and lounge at the pool.  Ants are gathering in their winter food in the middle of summer. 

The third part of the ant philosophy is that ants think summer all winter. That is so important. During the winter, ants remind themselves, “This won’t last long; we’ll soon be out of here.” And the first warm day, the ants are out. They want to work.  They want to take care of their responsibilities, to be all that they can be.  If it turns cold again, they’ll dive back down but then they come out the first warm day. They can’t wait to get out.

Here’s the last part of the ant philosophy. How much will an ant gather during the summer to prepare for the winter? All he possibly can. What an incredible philosophy, the “all-out” philosophy.

It’s the little things that matter

Most of our problems like overeating, drinking, smoking, feeling overwhelmed and giving up on our dreams come from a short term focus. Success and failure are not overnight experiences. It’s all the small decisions along the way that cause people to fail. Failure to follow-up, failure to take action, persist, and to manage our mental and emotional states. The Best Leaders Give Their Best to Their People By…

1) GROWING

People naturally follow leaders they respect as being more advanced than they are. For this reason, personal growth is directly proportional to influence. If you desire to gain followers, then pay the price of getting better.

To give people your best, you have to elevate your leadership capacity. Consider the metaphor of walking up a narrow staircase - you can only go as fast as the person in front of you. When leaders stop growing, they quit climbing and impede the progress of everyone following them. However, when leaders grow, they ascend the stairs and create space for those behind them to climb higher.

Personal growth involves challenging yourself, and pushing beyond the realm of comfort. When is the last time you did something for the first time? How long has it been since you felt in over your head?

2) SERVING

Serving others is an attitude issue. Unfortunately, many leaders operate under a king-of-the-hill mentality. Seeing relationships as win-lose propositions, they ultimately burn bridges and isolate themselves.

All leaders serve. Sadly, some serve only themselves. Serving is a motives issue, and the crux of the matter boils down to a simple question: “Who?” Does a politician serve the public or his pocketbook? Does a CEO serve to benefit her shareholders or to support her lifestyle? The best leaders set a tone by serving and prove they are deserving of being out in front.

3) MODELING

Growing leaders have something to share; serving leaders have something to give; modeling leaders have something to show. As V.J. Featherstone said, “Leaders tell, but never teach, until they practice what they preach.” The best leaders embody their values. Their passion exudes from every pore and demands respect.

Time

Boss says, ” I sure wish I had some carrot juice.”
Different responses:
1. $5 an hour employee: “I’d like to have a glass of carrot juice too!”
2. $6 an hour employee: “You like carrot juice! I like cokes myself!”
3. $7 an hour employee: “If I had some carrots I’d make you some.”
4. $8 an hour employee: “Would you like me to find someone to make you some?”
5. Employee who can decide their own salary: ” I will be right back, sir, within 20 minutes.” He returns with a glass of carrot juice requesting more information. “Would you like this at a specific time daily? I can make it happen, sir!”

Everytime you see your boss unhappy it’s has potential for promotion.
